How Old Is Lamine Yamal?
Yamal was born on July 13, 2007, so he is 19 years old. His 17th birthday fell the day before the EURO 2024 final, which Spain played against England.
Early Life and Family
Yamal grew up in Catalonia, in the working-class Rocafonda neighbourhood of Mataró. His father, Mounir Nasraoui, emigrated to Spain from Morocco. His mother, Sheila Ebana, emigrated from Equatorial Guinea. His parents separated when he was about three, but they continued to raise him together. He is also close to his grandmother Fatima and his younger brother Keyne.
One story from his childhood has become part of his legend. In 2007, his family won a raffle organised by UNICEF and a Spanish newspaper. The prize was a photo with the Barcelona squad, and Yamal appeared in it as a baby with Lionel Messi. His father shared the picture during EURO 2024 with a caption that translates roughly to “the beginning of two legends.”
Club Career: FC Barcelona
Yamal came through Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy. In 2023 he made his first-team debut at 15 years, 9 months and 16 days old, which made him the youngest player ever to play for the club’s senior side.
His rise was fast:
- October 2023: He signed a contract extension with a €1 billion release clause.
- 2023–24: He became the youngest player to score in La Liga and the youngest to reach double-figure goal contributions in the league.
- 2024: He won the Kopa Trophy, awarded to the best under-21 player in the world.
- May 2025: Barcelona replaced his youth-scale deal with a long-term contract running to 2031.
He plays mainly on the right wing and cuts inside onto his left foot. His dribbling, vision and composure in tight spaces have led to frequent comparisons with Messi.
International Career: Spain
Yamal’s international breakthrough came at EURO 2024 in Germany. In the semi-final against France, he scored a long-range equalizer and became the youngest goalscorer in the tournament’s history. Spain went on to beat England in the final and won the title unbeaten.
He then helped Spain win the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the biggest trophy of his career so far. He turned 19 during the tournament.
